In the automotive industry, even the smallest disruption in the supply chain can have far-reaching consequences. A leading automotive supplier was facing exactly that. A failure would have triggered a production stop at the OEM, with potentially severe financial and reputational damage. As if that weren’t enough, global supply chain disruptions, cost pressure from the OEM and the introduction of a new technology that caused quality issues piled on top.
After a comprehensive analysis of the existing production processes, the supply chain and the quality control mechanisms, it became clear that significant change was needed. A detailed action plan was developed. Operational-excellence methods, line optimisation and staff training were identified as the central levers. In addition, strategies were developed to manage the global supply chain disruptions and the cost pressure. Particular attention went to addressing the quality issues caused by the new technology.
Implementing the action plan required close cooperation across departments at the supplier, from production through to procurement and quality assurance. Continuous performance monitoring made it possible to adjust strategies as we went. The challenge was substantial, but the result speaks for itself: productivity rose by more than 80%. On top of that, supply capability was secured and quality control mechanisms were put in place that guarantee consistently high product quality.
This case shows how targeted, data-driven change can not only lift productivity dramatically but also secure supply capability and product quality, even under conditions of global supply chain disruption, cost pressure and technology challenges. It is a triumph of engineering and management, and a demonstration of the transformative power of operational excellence.
