VIA Optronics GmbH is a respected provider of interactive display solutions, with a broad portfolio that covers technology for Optical Bonding, copper-based metal-mesh touch sensors and customised interactive display systems. During 2019 our consultancy supported VIA Optronics extensively in the implementation of a new production line and the introduction of first Industry 4.0 solutions at the Nuremberg site.
The focus of the consulting mandate was on the production of 42-inch touch displays, used primarily in air-traffic surveillance systems. The challenge was to scale production efficiently during the so-called ramp-up phase. The starting position was characterised by a prototype production line, low output and a high error rate in the production processes. There was also no systematic data collection from production.
These challenges produced several specific objectives for the project. They included a complete redesign of the production layout, the integration of a fully automated production line into a limited footprint and a significant increase in output to the defined target volume. In parallel, the project aimed at implementing a scanning system for data capture and real-time data monitoring. Continuous and sustainable improvement was to be achieved through lean processes, data-based pricing and through error analysis and error prevention.
By applying lean management principles and Industry 4.0 strategies, the target output was reached and the production process was significantly optimised. Product quality improved, processes were standardised and production was sped up. These improvements produced concrete project enquiries from international companies considering a collaboration with VIA Optronics.
The next steps for VIA Optronics are the international implementation of sustainable shop-floor management and the completion of the scanning processes across all projects.
